VM Fusion 12 on MacOS Monterrey:
When I change the display resolution on a Windows VM, the Fusion window resizes to accommodate. Normally this is preferred. However, I have a unique situation where I need the Fusion window size to remain the same regardless of the resolution. The software running on this particular VM causes the resolution to change from high to low, back and forth, several times over the span of a short time and it causes the VMware SVGA 3D display driver (what I assume is the problem) to freak out flickering back and forth among the changing resolutions and causes problems.
I have tried disabling this driver and after reboot it gets reinstalled/reenabled and it seems to temporarily solve the problem (although introducing other issues from not having supported video codecs or whatever).
So, I'm not sure if there's a vmx config setting that can be adjusted (I have tried disabling fitGuestUsingNativeDisplayResolution for example, which does something noticeable but doesn't solve the actual problem at hand) or if there's an alternate display driver/adapter available that avoids the window resizing issue, etc.
Any tips/ideas?
Thread needs moving to the Fusion area, reported to moderators.
Uninstalling VMWare tools will remove the driver and give you a fixed window (but of course, you lose all the other tool functionality).
Have you tried using RDP into the VM instead of accessing it directly? That might be a workaround.
In the Fusion Preferences (Menu > Preferences...)
Have you tried setting the Display preference for Single Window to "Stretch the virtual machine in the window"?
I've tried this by changing the screen resolution from inside the guest, and the window size remains constant. Perhaps this might work for you?
this worked perfectly. thank you. i wonder if there's a way to do this per vm, and not using a global setting that affects all vms. but for now, this is a good solution. thank you!
