Operation on File Failed vmdk

I keep doing fresh installs of my Virtual machine, and each time i get the following error.

Operation on file "/Users/eckoreko/

Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/

Windows XP Professional.vmwarevm/

Windows XP Professional-000001-

s009.vmdk" failed.

if the file resides on a remote file system, please make

sure your network connection and the server where this

disk resides are functioning properly. If the file resides

on a removeable media, reattach the media.

Choose Retry to attempt the operation again.

Choose Abort to terminate this session.

Choose Continue to forward the error to the guest

operating system.

if i hit continue the error will go away, but eventually come back. This happens daily at random times (usulay when I need to do something that can only be done in Windows). If i hit Abort i get the following error.

WMware Fusin cannot sync with disk

before abort.

Disk /Users/eckoreko/Documents/Virtual

Machines.localized/Windows XP

Professional.vmwarevm/Windows XP

Professional-000001-s009.vmdk may be incosistent.

Again, I have reinstalled fresh versions of Win XP Pro, and VMware. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like there's something wrong with Windows XP Professional-000001-s009.vmdk, especially since it keeps happening to that file. I would suspect either filesystem issues or hardware issues, and would suggest running low-level disk tools.

I am also having this problem with my VMWare image of Windows XP. However, this is the image that everyone else at my company is running with no issues.

I have run low-level disk tools on my disk, and I have actually reformatted the disk and re-installed everything, and the problem persists.

NO THIS IS NOT RESOLVED. DON'T MARK IT SUCH UNLESS THERE IS AN ANSWER.

I have a host system that shut down unexpectedly. When I brought it back up, my vmware instance will not boot as a result of this issue. it's amazing that this would even happen on such a mature product. Are there any virtual disk recovery tools that will help me out of this mess or am I in real trouble.

I have been experiencing similar error messages on the two vmdk files associated with my (main) VM for some time. The frequency of the errors seems to be increasing.

Currently running Workstation v6.5 on a Vista SP1 host (ThinkpadT61p). I have upgraded Workstation several times in the hope that each release or patch level would address the problem, to no avail. The vmdk files are on the laptop's internal disk, so there should not be any timeout issues occuring like you might expect to see with a file located on the network, or even on a USB disk.

It has started looking like the issue may be with the host hardware or OS. Not to bash Vista, but I've been decreasingly happy with it since being issued the laptop about a year ago. Took the time to run low-level diags on the disk earlier this week (everything except the Surface Scan; I got pulled into working on an issue that needed to be addressed soonest). The disk diagnostics all passed with flying colors, but I haven't been able to decide if I should pursue the hardware avenue more aggressively, or look to the OS. The laptop has been experiencing unexplained moments of near-catatonia where it stops responding (on the VM and/or on the host) for as long as 10 minutes before it "gasps" and starts responding again (usually reacting to the keystrokes and mouse clicks that were waiting in the pipeline from after it started to freeze until I realized it was not just slow to respond.

I'm pondering "upgrading" to XP, but have not decided yet.

Has anyone experiencing this heard anthing official from VMware?

Hi,

I am also had this problem with my VMWare since I install VM Workstation 6.5 on my Vista Host.

After a few minutes a got the message "Operation on File ... Failed"

With an old VM-Player I worked for a long time without any problems.

I google a bit and found a solution (for me, it works).

Disabling the "superior" Windows Defender and the VM 6.5 will work properly.

Ciao

anyting suspicious?

i am also running a virus scanner antivir (free-av.de) which might also scan the very large .vmdk virtual disks,

and maybe while the virus scanner is scanning the file vmware can not access the disk image.

i tried to add the VM's dir as exception to the antivir configuration. (see screenshot attached)

I am running a Linux Ubuntu VMware Image on a Windows Vista Host. I was getting this error message when I was doing build and network operations. Disabling the Windows Defender Service in Vista resolved this problem for me.

I am running Windows Vista in Fusion and I get the same message, usually within 10-20 minutes of a session:

Operation on file "/dev/disk0s3" failed.

If the file resides on a remote file system, please make sure your network connection and the server where this disk resides are functioning properly. If the file resides on removable media, reattach the media.

Choose Retry to attempt the operation again.

Choose Abort to terminate this session.

Choose Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system.

Continue Abort Retry

I checked Windows Defender and it is disabled on my system. I use Windows Live OneCare instead. So disabling Windows Defender is not working for me. This has made my system extremely unstable and I am constantly wondering when it will crash when I'm using it. What are these low level disk tools that everyone keeps mentioning? Are they part of Vista? How do I find out more about them? Or is there another solution to this problem?

Thanks!

Windows Defender on Windows 7 x64 was the culprit for me. Very relieved - I need to do a presentation on that laptop soon Smiley Happy

I had the same problem and was using Time Machine to backup my files. I didn't know that you can not retreive your files when VMware fails to run. You need to back up all of your data files to a shared folder on the MAC side as not to have the problem I had. It cost me $1,800.00 to get my system back running again and to retrive my data files for my work programs. I am not happy with vmware and how the system just started to become unstabel and crash. I would not buy this product again and would not reccomend it to anyone since it cost me so much to recover.

GlenVisCom, couldn't you use Time Machine to restore a copy of the VMware image from before the disk error occurred?

When you retore the vmware back using Time Machine you will lose any data back to that point. My vmware lost a critical file back one month so I had to much business indo that I had to recover. Even going back the vmware seemed to unstable, like this problem just kept growing worse over time. Now I am using a shared folder for all of my data files and this will always keep my data on the MAC side in case this happens again.

Hi GlenVisCom, when installing Wine after unpacking libaudio2_1.9.1-5_i386.deb and unpacking Wine file, you get the same message.

Operation on file "D:\My Virtual Machines\Ubuntu.vmdk" failed (There is not enough disk space).

Choose Retry to attempt the operation again. Choose Abort to terminate this session.

Choose Continue to forward the error to the guest operating system.

After hitting Retry a similar times, you also get the message.

Operation on file "D:\My Virtual Machines\Ubuntu.vmdk" failed (There is not enough disk space).

The filesystem where disk "D:\My Virtual Machines\Ubuntu.vmdk" resides is full.

Choose Retry to attempt the operation again. Choose Abort to terminate the session.

After hitting Retry a similar times and unpacking several packages, the screen becomes black and the message appears, as quoted in the message.

You are not sure that Sony Vegas can save your project, when VMWare Workstation posts up an error, as posted up here.

After you have installed Wine in your virtual machine, it still worked when you free up as much disk space.

I'm having this same problem. Running VMWare on my MacBookPro3,1 OS X 10.6.2 (10C540) with a Windows Vista VM. Randomly getting this error "Operation on File.... Windows Vista-s008.vmdk failed".

I totally deleted and reinstalled the Windows Vista VM from scratch and still get the problem.

Basic OS X Disk Utlity shows the host hard drive is fine. The VM is running local on the host machine disk.

Even if I click "Continue" it just comes right back. I have to "Abort" and then restart the VM. It will run fine for awhile and then the same error returns later.

I'm trying to patch Windows Vista using Windows Update, I'll need to confirm if it happen even if I just boot up and don't run any Updates.

I also turned off Windows Defender (read that in another post, didn't seem to make a difference). Also read in another post that someone was having this problem when giving more than 1GB memory to the VM. I'm running it with 2GB memory, so I'll try reducing to see if that change anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Todd

I was running my Windows XP fine until suddenly I started receiving the same error. I updated my VMWare to 2.07 and this did not fix the issue. I looked for Windows Defender and I did not have that installed on my system.

I installed VMWare tools after restarting my Windows XP and selected the "repair" option. I restarted and I haven't had the problem since. I did do one other thing though, but I'm not sure if this was the reason. I also set my current network as a "trusted network" in MCAfee.

Hope this helps someone!!

I had this exact same problem. It came out of nowhere. I was using vmfusion just fine and then one day the errors started. I could hit abort and restart vmware but it would continue to happen eventually. So I closed everything, reparied permissions on my mac's internal hardrive and restarted. Everything is back in working order. Hope it helps.
