Network adapters in VMware

Hi

I'm not sure how to explain this, but I've installed a program called CATIA, it's a CAD application. In order to create a license I have to run a small program which gets the target id of a chosen network adapter. However, when I run it, I get a message that it doesn't find any adapters. If I try to do the same thing using Parallels, it works. I think this has something to do with how VMware handles networking.

Anyone know how to fix this? If I can't get the target id required to use CATIA then unfortunately I'm going to have to go back to parallels and I really don't want to Smiley Sad

Thanks

P.S. I've attached a screenshot of the command prompt in windows showing the messages I get when trying to acquire the target id.

Sounds like the program isn't detecting your network card - are you able to use the internet normally from the virtual machine? What's the output of the suggested "i4target -v"?

I can access the internet from the vm without any problems...

I've attached a screenshot of what the output looks like when i run i4target -v in parallels.....

edit: etung I've also attached the two programs so you can try it on your computer....

We have been working with IBM Japan regarding this issue, and there is now a solution. Their newest i4target.exe version 4.6.8 does produce a LUM Target ID.

Was this only addressed in the Windows version? I'm running i4target version 4.6.8 for linux and am having the same problem as the original poster.

We only tested on Windows.

Hi,

I have downloaded and tried 4.6.8 but it doesn't give me any info or work. Are there detailed steps for getting it to work in VMWare Fusion / Windows Vista for Catia?

Thanks

Hello,

I just tried to get the "target id" of my VM with the i4target (version 4.6.8) tool but it does not work (cf. attached image). Do you have any idea about the reason? Any solution?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

M.

Has anyone found a workaround for this?

I recently virtualized a server and found that this i4target does not let the license service start properly.  I recieve this error:

*** Warning: i4target unable to generate targetId on virtual platform

I see that I am running i4target Version 4.6.8.15 for Windows.

I see the OP was using the VMware Accelerated AMD PCnet Adapter however have you tried it with the Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Adapter?  The following is the output I get using the Intel Network Adapter in the Virtual Machine and the Key is created in the Windows Registry.

I just switched to E1000 (the Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Adapter) and ran itarget -v and I get the following:

What Guest OS?

Was this a clean built Virtual Machine or a P2V, V2V, etc.?

Are there any Flags in the Device Manager?

Did you run the command as an Administrator?

Where did you get the Drivers for the Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Adapter?

What Guest OS? Windows Server 2003 SP2

Was this a clean built Virtual Machine or a P2V, V2V, etc.? It was a P2V

Are there any Flags in the Device Manager? No

Did you run the command as an Administrator? Yes

Where did you get the Drivers for the Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Adapter?  After adding the NIC on the VM settings, Windows automatically installed the driver for me.

I appreciate any help on this.  Thanks.

Since this was a P2V I'd start by cleaning up any remnants of the Physical Build's Networking that are Ghosted in Device Manager.

In a  Command Prompt.

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc

Then in Device Manager, click Show hidden devices on the View menu.
Then delete any ghosted networking entries.

Then close Device Manager and restart the Virtual Machine.

You may also want to clear the "\\HKLM\SOFTWARE\IBM\License Use Runtime" Key before running i4target again.

Note: As usual when making these types of modification make sure the Virtual Machine is properly backed up before proceeding in case of any additional issues that can/may arise.

Okay I dug out an old P2V of Windows Server 2003 R2 and added the Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Adapter with the latest Drivers from Intel's web site and cleaned up the ghosted network adapters and I end up with "Invalid virtual host" so there is not much more I can add other then to say it worked in Window 7 Enterprise but not Windows Server 2003 R2, sorry.
