Now it's finally possible, with fuse-ext2[/b]:

It just works in Leopard from the VMware-installed contextual menu (of course, with MacFUSE already installed): I tried it with an Ubuntu 9.04 VM...
P.S.: Don't know, however, if it works also with the new Ext4 format.
