Monterey (12.0.1) Intel guest on Big Sur (11.6.1) Intel 12.2?

I get "Unable to create the installation medium" when selecting the "Install macOS Monterey.app" after a few seconds.

I had tested that the installer comes up on the host, before trying this.

I tried the trick in this post:

https://blog.eucse.com/how-to-run-macos-monterey-12-beta-in-vmware-fusion/

to convert the DMG to an ISO.  The install hung after a while... which makes me think this all isn't supported.

I have other macOS guests working fine on this machine.

Since I always make the USB installer anyway, I manually created the 12.0.1 guests and then connected the USB installer to them and restarted them, and the install took right off.

What does "I manually created the 12.0.1 guests" mean?

Another data point: I tried on another machine.  Mac Pro 6,1 w/11.6.1 ... same issue with copying.  I tried as administrator, too, and that failed in the same way.

"What does "I manually created the 12.0.1 guests" mean?"

File>New>Create a custom virtual machine.

OK, that worked.  Thank you.  The install has started.... hopefully it will work.

It's a little frustrating to see the VMware Fusion blog say Monterey is supported and having to waste so much time on this.
