Mic cuts out in Cisco IP Communicator

Running Cisco IP Communicator 2 on Vista under VMWare Fusion. When someone calls me, it rings fine and I answer...the conversation starts, but after 30-40 seconds the mic input cuts out.

I am using a USB headset which windows has control over (mac os doesn't see it)...I was originally using the built-in Mac microphone and speakers but thought there might be an issue with the two OSes sharing the audio, so thought I'd try the headset to see if it solved the problem...it didn't.

Any suggestions?
