Map "Insert" key on a MacBook Pro?

I've been wrestling with this for a long time.

In my Windows machine I use X-Windows, Putty, etc. to work in a Unix environment, and I would usually use Shift-Insert to paste text (CTRL-C doesn't work at the command line).

I've searched all over, and found posts saying use Fn+M, among others, but nothing seems to work. I've tried mapping the F9 key to "Insert" in Fusion preferences, then trying Shift-F9, but nothing happens.

Does anyone have a method they've tried & tested which seems to work for them?

Thanks!
