Mac OS 13 on Mac OS 14 host: display resolution too low - how to tell VM to use higher screen size?

I'm running an OS X 10.13.6 VM on a 10.14 host. It works fine but the VM has a small screen and if I stretch the window, it's low-res (1024x768 or so). System Preferences  How do I make it take advantage of my big display?

turns out this works (in terminal, inside the VM):

sudo /Library/Application\ Support/VMware\ Tools/vmware-resolutionSet 1920 1080

@mlevin77

Have you installed VMware Tools in the guest?

The same way as you would on a physical system running MacOS, through System Preferences.
