MacOS 11.4
Fusion 12.1.2
Windows build 19041.vb_release.191206-1406
This is a continuation of my problems here: https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-Fusion-Discussions/Can-t-boot-into-Windows-10-Safe-Mode-F8-...
Tried the latest Windows feature update again, got the same problem, the login screen comes up OK, but after login get a black screen.
This time after booting into Safe Mode, to try to change the driver for the VGA card to the standard MS VGA Driver (and then uninstall VMware Tools, and install latest VMware tools - though I thought I already had the latest) it appears to come up but when I move the mouse over the Windows menu bar I just get a spinning wheel, so cannot open Device Manager.
Eventually after clicking a few times, a window comes up that says "Microsoft Windows - The application is not responding....Do you want to end this process" and the black screen (other than the menu bar) turns gray.
Getting really frustrated with this, seems I'm never going to be able to update Windows and the only choice will be to create a fresh VM with fresh Windows 10 install and then restore my backed up data, and re-install all my apps.
Any ideas?
I can boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and can enter commands.
Entering "wmic path win32_VideoController get name" it responds "VMware SVGA 3D" (though I had 3D disabled in Fusion's Settings).
So is there a way to uninstall VMware Tools from the CMD line or change the display driver to the standard MS VGA driver?
"regedit" also runs, so I can edit the Registry if that helps. But nothing happens with "devmgmt.msc" so can't run Device Manager.
Thanks. Turned out that the virtual CDROM drive with the VMware tools setup executables was E: on my VM not "D:"
Anyway, ran the uninstall from E:.
But the display driver is still VMware SVGA 3D according to "wmic path win32_VideoController get name"
After rebooting it says E: is now the Virtual Printer, so it appears that the VMware tools uninstall ran since the executables are all gone (and there's no other virtual CDROM drive, checked D:, F:, G: etc.)
And I'm still getting the black screen after normal login.
And still getting the spinning wheel on the menu bar when booted into regular Safe Mode.
I'm getting the feeling something is corrupted and I should just create a fresh Windows 10 VM.
