Internal SATA drive is shown as External on 10.9

I created a new VM for 10.9 using Fusion 7.1.1 and chose all the defaults during setup.  By default, the system drive is SATA.  After completion, I opened Disk Utility.  Looking at the info for the system drive, the drive is listed with a Connection Type "External".  In comparison, if I follow the same steps, but instead chose to have the drive be SCSI, the device is listed as being "Internal".  Is this to be expected for SATA drives or is this a bug?  If this is not a bug, is there any way to make the drive "Internal" during the VM creation process or after VM creation?

I've done some more research and have learned a few things:

1.  The observed behavior is also true for 10.8 and 10.10, but not 10.7.  On 10.7, the SATA drive is listed as being "Internal".

2.  For the 10.9 VM, under General Settings, if I change the OS to 10.7, the SATA drive is listed as being "Internal".
