Huawei Vodafone Mobile Broadband (error code 4) won't connect

I just bought a Vodafone R201 WiFi modem for my MacBookPro (10.7.2) and it runs OK.  I wanted to use the Vodafone firmware updater for the modem but the only firmware updater is for Windows.  I have W7 running on VM 4.0.2.  When I plug the USB cable into my Mac with W7 running, the Mac takes over no matter how I have my settings and I get the error above:  Unable to connect to the USB device "Huawei Vodafone Mobile Broadband (Huawei)" to the virtual machine (error code 4).  Contact VMware, Inc. technical support for assistance."

Anyone have any experience with this?

Tracy,

Great!  I had to do all three stages.  First one didn't make any difference.  Second phase allowed W7 to load a lot of stuff from the web but not all.  USB device didn't appear or install its software.  On the third stage, the USB device was finally recognized and I could update.  Bit of a slog, but got there.
