How to start downloaded VM

I've downloaded a VM (Mono on Open Suse 10.2) that I'd like to have a "play" with over the xmas break but I can't get it to run. I'm sure the problem is down to a shrunk disc but i don't know what to do about it since there are very few options anywhere in this release of Fusion. Can anyone help please?

The message i continually get is "File not found: openSUSE 10.2.vmdk" despite the fact it is indeed there. Here is the directory listing of the vm:

Please post the contents of the .vmx file too, it has the path that's being referenced to the .vmdk. Also where are the download files stored (local disk, external USB)? If an external USB drive is used, what file system are the files on?

Eek! Okay, long listing follows then Smiley Happy

I downloaded the VM to the desktop, then double clicked it to extract it to the folder "openSUSE 10.2" and then moved that folder to my vmware directory which resides "/Users/mart/vmware" on the local (boot) disk, so HFS+ Journaled.

Thanks for the help! (Am off out shortly so will pick up tomorrow)

I wouldn't expect the space in the filename to be a problem, but for grins try removing the space from the first VMDK (openSUSE 10.2-shrunk0.vmdk) and change the corresponding value in the VMX file, i.e. to openSUSE10.2-shrunk0.vmdk

Also peek inside the first vmdk, openSUSE 10.2-shrunk0.vmdk and look for any absolute file paths. You could rename all the -sxxx.vmdk files too but that requires changing references inside the "openSUSE 10.2-shrunk0.vmdk" file.

Okay, got it. Nothing to do with any of the spaces, there was something up with the snapshot i guess.

Deleting the file "openSUSE 10.2.vmsd" resolved the problem.

Thanks for your time.

Martin.

I really didn't think it was the space character, i was just working off your message. I'm glad you figured it out. How is OpenSuSE 10.2 running on Fusion?

Yeah, it's not too bad so far - I've not had too much time to test it yet but as others have said CPU usage seems considerably higher on the linux guest than it is on the Vista guest that i'm also trying out. Also, graphics performance is pretty dire compared to Windows, almost to the point that I wasn't sure if the vmware xserver was installed but it seems that vmare-tools is there so i guess it is.

Having said that, I've not upgraded the VMWare tools yet because it's been 18 months now since i owned a SUSE box so I don't really know my way round any more and don't know if the kernel source and all the rest of it is installed or not...

Will give it a better trial over xmas. Certainly the Mono installation that i wanted to test seems to be pretty useless. You'd kind of expect a virtual machine that ships with the sole intent of allowing people to get up and running quickly with Mono to be able to successfully compile and run a "Hello World" type program, wouldn't you?!! Anyway, that's OT and nothing to do with VMWare Smiley Happy
