How to recover data of Virtual Machine broken???

First sorry for my English !!

I had installed Vmware Fusion V2.0 whit XP, My Macbook had a problem in the disk, and I had to reinstall O.S. again.

I have only this file Virtual Machine

Can I re make the V. M with these files?

I ned to recover the data of the old XP, please !!!

first of all (in case you did not already do it) backup the files!

To find out which files are missing and what can be done, please attach the log files to your next post.

Sounds quite hard but I would try this:

create a new vm

add an exiting disk (I would try Windows XP Professional-s001.vmdk)

try to power on the vm

if it doesnt' work I would create a new vm with a windows OS than add the existing disk to the VM, you should be able to open them and recover the data.

my thought is that you could miss the very first disk since I would expect a Windows XP Professional-s.vmdk but I could be wrong.

thats  not a valid virtual disk - a valid virtual disk would be  "Windows XP Professional.vmdk" - but that seems to be missing

we can reconstruct the missing vmdk if we see the old log-files

I tell you what I did:

I made a new VM in the same director of old VM. Then, following file was created:

Windows XP Professional-s001.vmdk   to   .......021.vmdk (21 file)

Windows XP Professional.nvram

Windows XP Professional.vmdk

Windows XP Professional.vmsd

Windows XP Professional.vmx

Windows XP Professional.vmxf

Then I replaced  "Windows XP Professional-s0xx.vmdk" 1-21 by my old file 1-6

I edited "Windows XP Professional.vmdk" and, I changed into this file the name of this 21 file by 6 file.

But didn't work!!!!

As you told me, I attached the old log file.

According to the vmware.log file you should have the "XP Professional.vmdk" file and "Windows XP Professional-s001.vmdk" through "Windows XP Professional-s021.vmdk" so if you only recovered 6 segments of the virtual hard disk and you do not have a backup to restore from then you just may be out of luck.

If you do not have a backup to restore from you can try creating an new disk with a full number of disk segments by combining what you have with the missing segments from an empty, newly created disk using the same name and if that doesn't work then you're out of luck.

install XP into a new VM

to that VM add a new vmdk using  with 21 slices - format it with NTFS and assign driveletter E:
after formatting the additional disk replace the first 6 slices with the ones you have
then install "photorec" and / or "Ontrack Easy Recovery"
search for lost files on E:

You have given me the correct answer to my problem, I could recover the information from my VM broken.

I did what you indicated me. Only, it was not necessary to use "photorec" and / or "Ontrack Easy Recovery", Windows alone, fixed the data in disk E

Hello,

I have an issue with the backup file I did before installing upgrading the esxi version.

I only backup the xxx-000001.vmdk, xxx-000002.vmdk, xxx-000003.vmdk files and not the flat file (I copied the physical folder)

I wonder if you can help retreive my data?
