How fast is a high end 3D graphics card compared to running natively under Windows XP?

I want to virtualize a Windows XP computer on a Mac (Lion). How fast is a high end 3D graphics card compared to running natively under Windows XP?

It's hard to be specific, but a good rule of thumb is one generation behind the actual card.

In my opinion, running natively will have a slight advantage than running on a vm. Could be because of driver optimization, etc.
