I spoke to vmware support and can confirm it is not possible to rename a network.

I've got vmware fusion 6 pro.

I go: vmware > preferences > network

Under custom I have vmnet2 & vmnet4

Those fields are not editable in the UI and I do not know of a way to change it in that list at that location.  IIRC There was a time before VMware Fusion had its lame Network Editor where .vmx option like ethernetN.displayName was used depending on how it was configured and that could be edited although it was not officially supported to change it and it would be reset if changing the settings from the UI.

I think you just have to live with whatever VMware Fusion is setting it as.

I would like to do the same. Unfortunately VirtualBox has the same limitation, at least from the GUI.
