I am running a bootcamp partition under VMWare Fusion 8.1 and I've recently noticed that I am unable to format any external USB devices. This goes for USB keys as well as external hard disks. I'm running a mid-2014 Macbook Pro retina 15".
I've tried booting into bootcamp but unfortunately Im having another problem there. It won't boot up. In fact I first noticed the problem while trying to build a recovery disk to try and fix the bootcamp booting.
Any help would be hugely appreciated as this is extremely annoying ![]()
We will all know soon enough, unless they also break the pattern of their release cycle.
Big plans my friends... big plans ![]()

Im assuming this was fixed? But I'm experiencing this in Win7 32bit under Fusion 8.5.3. USB3.0 can't format or perform any low level functions on USB flash drive, but if I plug into a USB2 port all works fine.
Status please?
Hi kcarney81,
You are not mentioning it, but Windows 7 does not have a USB3 driver itself, so you at least need to install the specific driver that a Windows 7 VM needs in order to even support USB3.
Have a look at the following KB article for the details: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2128105
