Help converting my parallels vm to Vmware format using vmware converter

So, I followed a thread from this forum I can't locate right now, that detailed how to go from a Parallels VM to Fusion. Basically, uninstall Parallels tools, install vmware converter, run it and get it's output somehow (i just had vmware converter send it's output to samba share on my linux box). Then it stated you need to boot the resulting VM in Fusion with the vmscsi floppy attached and an XP SP2 isntall CD in which to do a recovery from. I did that, all went well I thought. Except honestly, I didn't have an SP2 cd, so I used whatever version of XP it is I do have. Probably the first version. So, I did this, and found that after rebooting, I have an NTLDR is missing error message when I try to boot from the hard drive of the VM. But the weird part is that if I hit Esc in the VM boot sequence and tell it to boot from the CD ROM (with the XP cd in it), it asks me to press any key to boot from cd, and i ignore this to let it continue to the hard drive. It succesfully boots then. But if I try to boot this VM without the XP setup disk attached, it gives me the NTLDR error.

At this point, I would save time by just reloading XP and the two apps I actually need Windows for. It's not like I'm rebuilding a computer that's important to me. But I'm kind of curious, because I like vmware converter and I want to know what went wrong. Can anyone help?

I should mention, I took the output of this vm and tried running it in vmware workstation 5.5. Could this be the problem? I bet it is now that I say it. newer hardware emulated in Fusion most likely. Crap. Perhaps I need to download the 6.0 beta and get that up on my linux box. Or just do this in Fusion since i"m posting in the Fusion forum.

I was inspired by tirmidi's efforts to go out and find an easier way. That set of instructions is here:

If you wind up having to start over with the conversion, try those instructions. They've been tested up through beta3 and Parallels 3188. Caveat: if your source VM has no NTFS file system, read this thread first:

Anyway, your current Windows install has a messed-up bootloader. Repairing it will involve the use of the XP recovery console, especially its fixboot and fixmbr commands. Here's Microsoft's support article on the recovery console:

Frankly, I would probably try a fresh conversion first.

Brianriceca's method is far more straightforward than mine, and better documented as well. I wouldn't hesitate to use his if I had to do it again.
