Has anyone had issues exporting a display to a Linux VM on your Mac

Trying to export a display from a network linux box to my VM linux machine (Centos5 x86_64).   Remote machine returns error "No displays configured at IP xxxxxxxx".   Xhost is running on my Centos VM, I have allowed access for the remote system (xhost +), there are no firewalls running, on network or my host mac.  If I try running a new xserver on the Centos VM with display 1,2 or whatever, I get error saying display 0 is already running.  Hopefully someone has run into this already and knows what the solution is.

Ok, so I figured out if I start in run level 3 and manually execute xwindows "startx", I can export a display from a remote unix box to my vmware centos machine.  If I start in run level 5 it doesn't work.  I do have vmware-tools installed.  Should I remove it?  Anyone ?
