I hope the title says it all.
The HP software for OS X seems to be OK. I can print from the Mac just fine. If only I could use the printer though Fusion! This feature really, really needs fixing.
Immediately after installing the bloated HP muck in my Windows XP VM I was able to print, and it looked good. My big mistake was re-booting the VM, but then I had to shut it down sometime.
Upon re-entering Windows I found that I could not print anything from any program to any printer, including Acrobat. The printers and faxes dialog could not be opened at all, the printspooler service could not be started, and Firefox and a bunch of other software would not start, including Sysinternals Autoruns!
The HP s/w could not be uninstalled either, so I had no option but to resort to deleting my VM altogether and restoring a backup.
This sucks so much, because I lost some important stuff and a heap of time. Looks like this HP driver is not happy in a VM.
If you buy one of these printers, I suggest you DO NOT install the HP drivers in Windows XP unless you have a very recent backup of your VM and some time to waste.
So my problem is, how do I print to this CP1525nw from XP and should I even try installing the HP s/w in Win 7?
Fusion supports driver-less printing, so if you enabled Printers on the VM settings, you should be see a printer name like HP CP1525nw#:1 in Windows Printer and Faxes panel, it is what we called Thin-print. That means if you have installed the printer drivers on your Mac, you can use this printer from VM without install its driver.
Of course, you can connect the printer to the VM directly by USB/firewire/network, in this case, you need to install the printer drivers to the vm.
Hope it helps.![]()
Thanks tracywang. I have never been able to force the Mac's printers to appear in my VMs, so in desperation I disabled all the HP services (4 in all), then exited Windows.
Next in VMware Fusion preferences I enabled "Printers" and "Allow a different default printer" in "Virtual Machine Preferences", and restarted the VM.
In the VM and with all the HP services disabled all my software works again and the printer properties showed that the printer was not connected to a port. I connected it to "Thinprint" and it works!
This may not be the regular way to do it, but XP is now uncrippled, the printer works from Windows and the printed pages look good.
