I have AVG Free in my Windows XP SP2 VM, and it works fine.

AVG should neither know nor care that it is running inside a virtual machine. From the perspective of an application, a VM is just a really boring PC.

In theory, AVG might have some conflict with VMware Tools, although I probably would have seen the same symptoms as you if it did. Unless maybe you installed AVG before[/b] you installed VMware Tools?

If you'd like to test this possibility, you could try uninstalling VMware Tools, uninstalling AVG, reinstalling VMware Tools, and reinstalling AVG. Caution: your VM is going to be really annoying to work with without VMware Tools. In particular, you will need to click in the VM's window to give it mouse focus, and press ctrl-cmd to get mouse focus out.

Once you have ruled out this possibility, try asking on AVG's free forum:

I suspect something is screwed up with AVG installation. I can't even remove it with the uninstaller. It says finished but still there. got to figure it out how with a manual removal.

I had a very similar problem with AVG, but not in a vmware session. It was due to a piece of spyware that came in on a windows vulnerability. After a clean with adware and spybot. I got it going. This was a fresh install. It got infected by something on the network, while running updates.
