Fusion problem printing form Windows to Mac

I use an iMac running Maverick and run Windows 7 on Vmware Fusion 6 on this machine.

My problem is that while I can print documents on both the iMac and on Windows 7 in that order, I have to quit Windows 7 to print again on my Mac.

My HP Officejet Pro reports that it is waiting for the printer when going from Windows to the Mac.

The printer is connected via the USB port to my computer.

Your help will be much appreciated.

When you first connect the printer - or launch Windows 7, do you get a prompt from Fusion "Where do you want to connect <printer>?" Or, at some point in the past, did you check the box "Remember my choice and do not ask me again"?

You can call up the USB preferences from the Virtual Machine menu, or access that pane within the Settings (also in same menu, or command-E). That should display said printer when connected.

You may be able to unplug the printer, wait a bit, then plug it back in and re-select "Connect to Mac" when (if) prompted.

Now, if you have any wireless capabilities: Say, a wireless printer that uses WiFi, or an Airport Extreme that has a USB port: You could connect your printer via that, and be able to print using either/both Mac & Windows without having to change any setting or unplugging. Just install it as a wired (USB) printer first, then do it again as an AirPort/Bonjour connection. I love that kind of connection.

Thanks for your help. Unplugging the printer was not the answer. I still have to close Windows to get the printer to work again on the Mac. My HP Officejet Pro uses wifi and it works with another printer in another room, but not if you want to use the scanning facility.

I want to use the scanner on both the Mac and Windows and I do not know how to get it to accept the scanner on Wifi. Helpful answers much appreciated.
