Hi,
First thing I would try in your case is to completely remove open-vm-tools (and desktop part) and try installing the vmware tools that is bundled with Fusion instead.
Yes I am aware that the suggested version is open-vm-tools, but quite often issues in open-vm-tools take a long long time to get resolved and in that case the normal vmware tools are the quickest way to get a working solution.
