Fusion/Unity Fullscreen/Native App Question

I've got Fusion installed, runs full screen and I use gestures to get to and from. Works as advertised. When I go to Unity mode, I lose the ability to go to the actual VM itself in fullscreen, and only have the ability to open apps natively on my Mac. Im sure this is meant to happen, but what im wondering is if I can use my Windows instance in full screen but also have the ability to toggle the unity windows and have things run natively on my mac at the same time. Am I making sense?

If im in fullscreen and not Unity and click the Fusion icon at the top menu bar, and select an application, it takes me to the full screen the windows machine and opens the app there. I'd like it to open the app natively on my MAC. It only does that in UNITY mode, which limits the ability to use gestures to get to full screen mode

This is expected behaviour and how it's designed. You can't use both single-window or full-screen at the same time as Unity.
