Fusion Beta 4.1 will not install

Well I tried to upgrade my beta 4 installation with the 4.1. Right at the end of the install just before the serial number screen, I get an error message that flashes by so fast, I can't read it. At the serial number screen, I can press the continue but I just get the "Finish Up" screen with a message at the time "There were errors installing the software". The panel just says "Please try installing again".

I rebooted my machine and tried to re-install without running any other software but I got the same result. I even tried toing back to the previous beta - build 48339 but it won't install either.

If you're still looking for suggestions for Beta 5, I'd like to see the error messages from the install if there are any. They might be helpful.

I'm on a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro with 2GB ram running OS X 10.4.10. Any ideas on how I can figure out my problem? I'm down right now so I'm going to have to move the VM to a Windows box until I fix it.

Thanks,

Could you look in the install.log file? This can be found at /var/log/install.log Sometimes a kext doesn't unload properly. I see this occasionally. Sometimes a restart will help, but if you posted the log file here (or the pertinent information) that would be useful.

You can also view the installer log file when installer hasn't closed the final pane yet. (it's available in the menus).

Thanks vinayv, that helped. I guess part of my problem is that I'm primarily a DOS/Windows user trying to move to Linux/Mac. I've been using Windows since 3.1 and some things about the Mac are really hard to get used to. Having the menus up on top is one of them. I miss things all the time because they're up there and I'm looking at the application's panel and seeing no menu whatsoever. Even finding the log file was hard because it wasn't visible in Finder. After some looking, I found the goto folder menu item and that got me there. I really hate hidden files. I always turn them off in Windows. Anyone know of a way to do that on the Mac?

The error I was getting from the log was that it couldn't write to /Library/Application Support/VMWare Fusion/config. I checked the file and fiddled with the permissions but nothing worked. I finally ended up moving the entire directory to the trash and was able to complete the install.

Thanks much for the help.

Glad your problem is solved. You can get the Finder to show all the files by doing the following.

1) Open up Terminal.app (located at /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)

2) type the following

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE; killall Finder;

3) Profit!!!

This should restart your finder.

You can find more information at (and others on the web).

Thanks guys. I didn't get back to the post until today but I tried your suggestions and I can now see all my files! I feel so much more in control. You have no idea how nice that feels.
