I have a very old iMac 21.5 which is on its last legs and will be replaced with a new iMac 27 in the next few weeks. I am currently running Fusion 8.5 (the newest version my Mac will run) and a Win 7 Pro guest OS.
My question is: Assuming I install Fusion Player 12 on the new iMac, can I copy my existing Fusion 8.5 VM into the new installation, or will I need to start from scratch (which would be a pain)?
You can, but a few hints.
Shut down the vm (not suspend) and remove any snapshots
Make sure you update VMWare tools and the virtual hardware when prompted
Don't use time machine to migrate - copy it manually using finder.
OK thanks for that.
I planned to use Migration Assistant to transfer everything from the old to new iMacs, but that would also transfer the old copy of Fusion 8.5 as well. Should I uninstall 8.5 (on the new iMac) then install 12, then copy across the VM?
Definitely do the shutdown/cleanup on the old machine first then. And I'd actually uninstall Fusion 8, do the migration, and then install Fusion 12 fresh on the new machine. No risk of old bits being brought over that way.
Great, thanks very much for your help.
