Fusion 3.1.4 on new Retina Macbook Pro can't boot 32-bit Ubuntu Linux guests

On a new Retina MBP running Lion and Fusion 3.1.4, any attempt to boot a 32-bit Ubuntu Linux guest results in:

Jul 03 11:24:53.366: vcpu-0| X86Fault_Warning: vmcore/vmm64/cpu/interp.c:398: cs:eip=0x60:0xc1035798 fault=13
Jul 03 11:24:53.366: vcpu-0| Vix: [4446670848 vmxCommands.c:9705]: VMAutomation_HandleCLIHLTEvent. Do nothing.
Jul 03 11:24:53.366: vcpu-0| MsgHint: msg.monitorevent.halt
Jul 03 11:24:53.366: vcpu-0| The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. You will need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point.

My first attempt was trying to boot a VM that I copied from my old Macbook.  After trying all the suggestions I could find in the forums, I gave up and started a fresh install with the 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 server ISO.  As soon as I choose "Install Ubuntu" from the boot menu, I get the same "The CPU has been disabled" message listed above.

I've seen a few other threads about problems with Fusion on the new MBP's, but none of the solutions have worked for me so far.  Maybe because I'm still stuck on version 3.1.4?

I've tried adding "cpuid.1.eax = "----:----:----:0010:----:----:1010:0111"" to the vmx file, but it doesn't make any difference.  Nor do the other suggestions from http://communities.vmware.com/thread/405898.

Will upgrading to Fusion 4 fix this?

I don't think it's Lion, since my old Macbook was also running Lion, and did not have these issues.

Thanks for any help!

Installed the trial version of Fusion 4, and I can boot now.
