Fusion 3.0.1 on MAcBookPro: Installation of Debian 5.0 64 bit guest fails early

I am trying to create a Debian 5.0 64bit VM, but so far unsuccessful. I tried both the standard debian-504-ia64-netinst.iso and debian-504-ia64-CD-1.iso from the CD set. With both installation images, CPU usage of VMware goes to 100% and stays there, while I only see a black screen with an underscore in the left upper corner. So I guess the GRUB boot loader fails to load its first stage. I don't have this problem with other linuxes, opensus 11.2 64 bit did work, Ubuntu 64 bit as well. Any ideas?

"ia64" does not refer to the Intel chip that Apple uses on/in the Mac products.

I would guess that you want the "amd64" versions

Good Luck

ChipMcK is right about using the amd64 on the Mac… Have a look at: Which of the numerous images should I download? Do I need all of them?

Also Debian is not officially supported however it has been know to work with some tweaking and although the following is a older thread you may find information in it useful:

Thanks! I did not see that there were two different ISOs ending in 64, and even if I had I probably would not have chosen the one being called "amd"...
