Dual operating system and HP printer

I am using Mac OS 10.5, with Windows XP as a virtual machine.

I have installed an HP F 2179 all-in-one printer, which works intermittently.

HP Support tells me their printers or at least this model is not intended to work on a dual operating platform.

THe problem occurs when printing from Mac, without Windows XP being open.

Is this infomration correct? If so, is there a fix?

If you're having problems printing from the mac side without fusion even being open then fusion is not the issue.
