Display Topology update request could not be completed in guest.

Seeing this error message each morning after multiple monitors are powered off at night.  Quit and restarting VM fixes it.  Thanks!  Versions - OS X 10.10 / Fusion 7.0.1 (2235595)

Hi daalliso,

Thx for using Fusion.

Do you mean problem happen after below steps?

1. In unity mode with multiple monitor

2. Power off monitors with fusion running

3. Power on monitors at the next day

And found the error msg you posted.

Could you pls let me know how many monitors do you use? type commad "system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType" in your terminal and paste output here.

And the monitor topology(can be get under apple's system preference -> Display -> Arrangement)?

Thx a lot & Nice day.

Yes, those are the exact steps.  There are five displays total; four monitors and then the Macbook screen.  All four monitors are powered off at night.  The monitor on the far right of the arrangement is off a Diamond USB DisplayLink Model: BVU195.

I found the issue this morning as well.  Another data point is that Fusion switches out of Unity and into Single Window mode.  Thanks!

Same here, getting the exact same message from Fusion.

I can confirm that this happens as soon as my Mac switches from single screen to multiple screen mode and back (just by unplugging/plugging monitors to my Retina MBP15, Mid 2012)

What I also experience is:

- had my Mac in single screen mode (used as a laptop)

- quit Fusion

- added 2 Apple Thunderbolt displays

- launched Fusion

- still got the error message, fusion needs to be re-launched again to get rid of it.

- Fusion also leaves unity mode as soon as the error occurs.

I am also getting this error. I have a Macbook Pro Retina that I often close and use with 2 external monitors. Often when transitioning from my laptop screen to the external monitors, I receive this error. It is new to VMWare Fusion 7.01 / Yosemite as it never happened in VMWare 6.x / Mavericks.

Hi joeljeske,

Thx for using fusion.

Could you pls try to shutdown the VM, and quit Fusion, then open VM again, to see whether that can fix the problem?

Actually, this warning message is newly added in Fusion 7. Before Fusion 7, if you can't enter unity mode successfully, the window will flashes or just quit unity without any notification.

It does fix the problem to restart the VM.

In VM Fusion 6, it would occasionally drop out of unity when adding/removing displays but I was always able to simply click on unity again and it would start back up. Now that we have a message, it requires a restart. I much prefer the behavior in v6.x.

VMWare Team,

Any ETA on a fix?

I am experiencing the same exact issue on a daily basis.  It might happen on the rare occasion prior to upgrading to 7.0, but now I have this problem at least once per day.

Running Fusion 7.0.1 on OS X 10.10.1 with Windows 7 guest.

I am having this problem as well on a 27" late 2009 iMac (2.8 GHz i7), 16 GB RAM, running OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 with VMware Fusion 7.1.0, where upon entering Unity mode, I would get the Display Topology error and while it went back to Single Window mode, it would have all sorts of artifacts, sometimes shrinking the size of both monitors down into a single window that didn't even use a quarter of one monitor. Shutting down the VM and Fusion and restarting did not fix it.  Rebooting the iMac did not fix it.  What seemed to make it stop was, when in Single Window mode, clicking the green "+" window button, making Fusion resize the window from the small window to the window covering the whole desktop of one monitor (not full-screen mode, just maximizing the window to fill the available desktop space), which also forced Windows OS to adjust to the new "monitor" size.  After I did that, I was able to re-enter Unity mode without the Display Topology error.  That was just a few minutes ago.  We'll see how long it lasts and if the "fix" works again should the error recur.

I had fixed this on my Macbook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2014 with Yosemite... Following this: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=102788...

When I deactivated "Displays have separate Spaces" It worked! Smiley Happy

Disabling spaces did not fix it for me although it does seem to happen less frequently.

Remove and install VMWare tools solved similar issue for me.

I also had exactly the same issue, however after reinstalling VMWARE TOOLS, (even prior to the restart of the repair) unity started to work.

It would appear a driver (I suspect a display driver) was no longer working as it should.
