Topic Name : Copy and Paste Between Virtual Machines and Your Mac Using the Menu

Publication Name : Using VMware Fusion

Product/Version : VMware Fusion/11

Question :

Hi Team,  After upgrade to Fusion 11 I found out copy paste does not work between macOS (10.14.1) and guest Windows 10. I have reinstalled VMware software in guest os. Checked isolation options are enabled in config. It does not work anyway.  Could you please suggest how can I enable copy paste?  Best regards, Kostyantyn

What do you see when you check "Sharing/Sharing Settings" under the Virtual Machine menu? If you see a message which says something like "Sharing requires Tools" (I don't recall the exact wording), then you probably have a corrupt installation of Tools. I fixed this on my own, but unless you're comfortable with technical trouble-shooting of Windows, you should open a support ticket and get help from VMware.

My process was as follows:

  • Uninstall Tools (although Fusion said I "needed Tools" to get Sharing to work, technically it was installed - but was a corrupted installation) - use the "Programs" feature in Windows 10 to remove it.
  • Use Regedit to remove references to VMWare Tools (not for the faint of heart if you are not comfy with Regedit - I'd recommend VMware's help). The only reference necessary to remove (at least in my case) was HKCU\Software\VMWare, Inc.\VMware Tools (I deleted the entire VMware Tools folder).
  • Restart Windows.
  • Show Hidden items and find C:\ProgramData\VMWare\VMware Tools - delete the VMware Tools folder. You can hide items again, once you've done that.
  • Delete the VMware Tools folder from C:\Program Files\VMware - if you can't do this, there's probably a service you need to stop. Open the Services application and stop VMWare Tools and there's one regarding physical disk which I also stopped.
  • Turn Sharing off and again restart Windows
  • Reinstall Tools (from the menu)

This worked for me, but there were bumps and points of confusion - I highly recommend that you open a support ticket with VMware, so they can help you avoid any pitfalls.

The issue you described is the exact one I had and the above process did resolve it. Good luck - and proceed with caution!

Thank you for rapid reply on my question.

Unfortunately your steps did not help in my case.

List of performed actions by me I added as appendix.

I'm going to open a support ticket with VMware as you suggested.

Thank you again.

Best regards,

Kostyantyn

Appendix

1. Uninstalled VMware software via programs in Windows 10.

2. Removed with Regedit VMWare folder in HKCU\Software though it was empty.

3. Disabled folder sharing (just in case).

4. Restarted Windows 10.

5. Deleted 'C:\ProgramData\VMWare\VMware Tools' folder.

6. C:\Program Files\VMware was missing, I think Uninstall app did it.

7. Services app shows no VMWare service running.

8. Restarted Windows 10.

9. Installed VMWare tools again.

10. Restarted again.

Unfortunately copy paste between OS still does not work.

I have found that doing an in-place repair of the VMWare Tools application, without then immediately rebooting, also resolves the issue.

Just wanted to add that riques's procedure worked for me, too.

VMWare Fusion 11.5.3

Host OS: Mac OS 10.13.6 (High Sierra)

Guest OS: Windows 10 Version 10.0.19042 Build 19042

Note:  In my case, I had to add a CD-ROM drive device to the Virtual Machine (it must be shut down to do so, of course) in order to install VMWare Tools.
