In VMware Fusion the hw.model seems to have been changed from VMware7,1 to VMware 20,1. Unfortunately this creates some problems for our corporate setup. Is it possible to set the hw.model in the *.vmx file? I tried:
hw.model = "VMware7,1"
hw.model.reflectHost = "FALSE"
But I still get:
$ sudo cat /sys/class/dmi/id/product_name
VMware20,1
You can downgrade it in the VM preference in the gui - not sure how far back you can go though. 7's pretty old.
The virtualHW.version = "20" is totally fine, I don't want to downgrade that. But the VM used to report itself to Windows/Linux as "VMware7,1" (even though the actual HW version was much newer). This seems to have been upgraded to "VMware20,1" with the newest HW version 20.
The commands to get this on Windows/Linux are:
wmic csproduct get Name
sudo cat /sys/class/dmi/id/product_name
A VMware HW version of 19 will still report: "VMware7,1" here. (which is what i need on HW version 20)
Ahh, gotcha. That one's beyond me, but good luck!
I agree good luck. The versioning you are seeing is in the Apple style. My speculative guess was that the developers were forgetting to update this since hardware version 7 and somebody realized that this year and fixed it for us. I also found the Windows WMIC command did not actually report this information until Windows 10.
