Cannot start virtual machines with USB 3.0 compatibility

I'm trying to connect a Nikon D800 to a Windows guest OS on a Mountain Lion host with VMWare Fusion 5.

If I try with USB 2.0 compatibility, then it gives me the error described here: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=100857...

If I go into the settings for the VM and change it to USB 3.0 Compatibility in the Advanced USB Options then (for both a full license of Windows 7 Pro and for a Windows 8 + IE 10 testing VM from Home | Testing made easier in Internet Explorer | modern.IE  ) when I click the play-like "Start Up" button or pick Start Up from the virtual machine menu, it will momentarily switch to "Starting Up" mode before returning to "Windows is off" and giving me the "Start Up" button.

How can I resolve this and boot Windows with a USB 3.0 controller?

Windows 7 doesn't have USB 3 support, so you're out of luck there.

Try connecting the camera after the Win8 VM is already booted and running, and then (when prompted) choose 'connect to VM'.
