Cannot ping/access guest from Host when using Host-Only

My host is a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6.4 with a guest Windows 7 on VMWare Fusion.

When I set up the networking to Bridged I can ping the guest from the host. But when I use Host-Only, I cannot.

Usually running in Bridged mode is fine, but when I don't have network access (on a plane, for example) I thought I could use Host-Only and still be able to access resources on the guest from the host.

I need to do this b/c I am developing a Rails app that requires MS SQL server as the data store (not my decision, but it is what it is).

Here is what I get when I run ifconfig from the host:

lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384

inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128

inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1

inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000

gif0: flags=8010<POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST> mtu 1280

stf0: flags=0<> mtu 1280

en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

media: autoselect

status: inactive

en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

ether 58:b0:35:65:be:de

inet6 fe80::5ab0:35ff:fe65:bede%en1 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x5

inet 192.168.200.214 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.200.255

fw0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 4078

lladdr 7c:6d:62:ff:fe:ff:55:6c

media: autoselect <full-duplex>

status: inactive

vmnet1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

ether 00:50:56:c0:00:01

inet 192.168.200.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.200.255

vmnet8: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500

ether 00:50:56:c0:00:08

inet 172.16.27.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 172.16.27.255

And this is what I get when I run ipconfig on the guest:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : localdomain

Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::205e:7ef3:a203:aaf9%11

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.200.128

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Tunnel adapter isatap.localdomain:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : localdomain

Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

And this is what I get when I try to ping 192.168.200.128 from the host:

Request timeout for icmp_seq 0

Request timeout for icmp_seq 1

Request timeout for icmp_seq 2

Request timeout for icmp_seq 3

ping: sendto: No route to host

Request timeout for icmp_seq 4

ping: sendto: Host is down

Request timeout for icmp_seq 5

ping: sendto: Host is down

Request timeout for icmp_seq 6

The firewall is turned off on the client.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can you ping the Host from the Guest?

Ping 192.168.200.1 from the Guest and see if you get a reply.

We'v the same problem.

It's possible to ping the host from the guest, but not vice versa.

The very same host on another vmware fusion installation doesn't have the problem.

I have the same problem. I'm running VMWare Server 2.0.2 on Ubuntu Server 64bit 10.04 (and 10.10).  WinXP guest machine sees the network fine with a BRIDGED adapter but can  not see the host machine when configured as HOST-ONLY adapter. The  guest adapter picks up its DHCP IP address from the host's virtual DHCP  server, but there's no communications in either direction between the two.

Any resolution and/or suggestions?

Thanks,

Tom
