Cannot create a new VM in Fusion 6.0.2 (1398658)

I'm unable to create a new VM; the process gets stuck on a blank screen:

1. File > New...

2. More options...

3. Create a custom virtual machine

4. Blank 'Welcome' screen

Clicking 'Continue' does nothing.

Two things I'd try would be using First Aid in Disk Utility to verify both the Disk and Disk Permissions then uninstall/reinstall VMware Fusion 6 after verifying the MD5/SHA1 checksum of the installer .dmg against it's published value before installing.

The volume is ok from Verify Disk.  There were some complaints about iBook permissions from Verify Disk Permissions; but those should be irrelevant to VMWare Fusion.  Did an uninstall as per the KB article (VMware KB: Manually uninstalling VMware Fusion), and re-installed after verifying.  Still hitting the same problem.

Did you verifying the MD5/SHA1 checksum of the installer .dmg against it's published value before installing!?

The picture you posted certainly doesn't look right and I curious if before you click "Create a custom virtual machine" does the window look like the one below?

Default_Select_the_Installation_Method.png

And to be clear if you then select "Create a custom virtual machine" you then click the "Continue" button and then get the screenshot you posted, correct?

You are correct.  This is the window right before the blank window.

Well hopefully a VMware employee will jump into the discussion otherwise if no one else has any suggestions you may just have to file a support request.

Hi Algebraic, and welcome to the VMware Communities!

That's a very interesting-looking problem...  If you launch Applications > Utilities > Console, then, in the left pane of Console, choose All Messages, and leave that visible while you go through the process of attempting to create a new virtual machine in Fusion, does the Console window show anything interesting happening at that time?

Cheers,

Thanks for the suggestion, I didn't even know about Console.  Here are the entries that occurred during the process: VMWare Fusion - Pastebin.com

I'm not sure what to make of the entries, though.

Is there another line above or below that in Console that gives a summary/description of the failure?  What you've pasted shows where the problem occurred, but usually there is a single-line summary of what went wrong.  It'll probably say something about "-[NSViewController loadView]" beyond what you've already pasted.

Thanks,

Sorry, no.  That was the last entry.  There isn't an error dialog or anything, just the blank screen.  Nothing happens after that last entry in the paste.  What else could I do to increase verbosity of output?  Are there some command-line flags I could use to get more logging to Console?

Darius,

I too am experiencing the same problem while running Fusion 6.0.2.

My console logs have a little more detail. Follow this link to see more details: https://gist.github.com/pstephens/8601761.

Let me know if you need any more data.

Thanks,

Peter Stephens

Could you paste the command output here:

ls -al '/Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj'

I found the only way to reproduce the issue is remove plVMDKOpenHelper.nib file in Fusion bundle. So I am not sure if your system has any issue to access this file.

Hi Algebraic,

Could you please let us know what your previous Fusion version was?  And how did you upgrade fusion, by using VMware Fusion - Check for Updates…, or install new build image directly?   You answer would be very helpful. Thank you.

Thanks,

Amanda

I am having the exact same problem. It also crashes if I attempt to create a new virtual machine by selecting the OS X Mavericks instal image. Quite frustrating.
