Cannot Update Vmware Tools in Fusion 10

Have a windows 10 vm.  Runs fine.  Updated to Fusion 10 (from 8.5.8).  Everytime I try to install vmware tools, it says that it cannot find the uninstaller.

I have tried uninstalling through the control panel, but get the same error message.

I cannot figure out how to manually uninstall so that I can reinstall.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

JD

ust wanted to post the answer I received from support.

You may completely uninstall VMware Tools by following the below steps:

Power on the Windows virtual machine.

Click on Install/Update/Reinstall VMware Tools, Skip this steps if it says Cancel VMware Tools installation.

From the Windows desktop screen.

Press Command+R key on the keyboard.

Type cmd in the 'run' Window and press open.

Type the below command:

Type 😧 and press enter

Type setup64.exe /clean and press enter

Note: If you have a 32bit Windows OS, type setup.exe /clean, press enter.

Click Yes when prompted and follow the onscreen instructions.

If you connect the Tools CD-ROM (by clicking 'Install' or 'Upgrade VMware Tools') and go into D:\ (or whatever you have the drive numbered to be) from within Windows, do you see the files?

It's looking for VMWareTools64.msi, which is not on the D drive (CD-ROM).

Frankly, I don't see it anywhere on the CD-ROM.  I am able to browse the contents of the CD-ROM, though, in file explorer.

I did a search of "this pc" looking for "vmwaretools."  No luck.

Any way to do a manual uninstall, maybe even via the registry?

Something isn't right.

When you click 'Install VMware Tools' it connects a virtual CD-ROM device and mounts our installer image.

In Windows you run the installer by clicking 'run setup64.exe' when Windows asks what you want to do with the device, or browse to the CD-ROM folder in Explorer and double-click it from there.

Can you send us a note to desktop-services@vmware.com so we can dig in?

I just sent an email to the specified address.

I enclosed a .pdf printout in the email of the communication related to this chat.

Thanks,

I had this on Windows 10, and when I opened Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs I could see the old version of VMware tools but not remove it. I finally fixed it (for Fusion 11) by running this Microsoft tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-r...

I have followed all the steps and removed WMWare Tools for Windows from my WMWare Fusion VM running under MACOS.  I am running v12.2.3 of Fusion.  However, when I try to reinstall WMWare Tools, WMWare will only install v11.3 of WMWare Tools.  I understand the current release of WMWare Tools is v12.  How do I update WMWare Tools to the current version.

You should be able to download the latest Tools from your VMware account. Go to downloads.VMware.com, look under Datacenter & Cloud Infrastructure, and you will see VMware Tools.

Is there a specific reason why you need the latest (12.0.0, released 3/1/2022) instead of the version that’s bundled with Fusion?
