Can't print

New comer to VMWare and love it! I am ona trial version, love to buy it, if I can resolve this printer issue. Running XP on MacBookPro Mac OS X. Have a Dell MFP 1815 DN, on the network. Mac on wireless prints to it. When attempting an install of the Dell software for the printer, even afetr providing the IP address of the printer, I can't see the printer. Although, I can ping the printer from a DOS prompt! Any ideas?

What network mode is the guest using? If NAT, try Bridged.

Guest is using NAT, and this is the only mode in which LAN & Internet connectivity is achieved.

What is the topology of your Network? What is the Dell MFP 1815 DN connected to and how is it acquiring its IP Address and what is its IP Address. If the MacBook Pro is using wireless then that implies there is a Router or WiFi Access Point etc. as a part of the Network and if so why can't you use Bridged Network on Guest?

What is the Guests IP Address?

What is the Hosts IP Address?

Basically have a look at and fill in the blanks.

Only NAT provides connectivity (to the LAN & the Internet) on the

guest (Windows XP). Bridge and Host-Only cause time-out.

I have a simple Ethernet network, powered by a Dell TrueMobile 2300

Wired/Wireless router, which is connected to a hub, where the printer

is, and wireless connection for the Mac (Host) and wireless for the

Guest (XP) on the Mac.

Mac (Host) IP: 192.168.2.4 via DHCP, wireless

XP (Guest) IP: 192.168.2.250 Fixed, wireless

Dell Printer IP: 192.168.2.201 Fixed, wired

Dell Router IP: 192.168.2.1 Fixed, wired & wireless

XP can ping/see all devices on the LAN, and access internet. But when

I try setting up the Dell printer, I can't see it:

- Through Control Panel, setup Printer option

- Through Dell software which has the driver and bunch of MFP apps and

software

Technical Nit-pit: The Virtual Machine is always presented a wired ethernet connection regardless of how the Hosts connects to the Network so to say "XP (Guest) IP: 192.168.2.250 Fixed, wireless" would mean you've added you own WiFi Network Adapter to the Virtual Machine and I suspect that you haven't however correct me if I'm wrong.

Try the following to see if you can setup the printer and let me know how far you get.

In the Windows XP Virtual Machine...

Click Start > Printers and Faxes

In Printers and Faxes click the File > Add Printer command

On the Add Printer Wizard dialog box click the "Next >" button.

Select the "Local printer attached to this computer" radio button and uncheck the "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer" check box then click the "Next >" button.

Select the "Create a new port:" radio button then in the "Type of port:" list box select "Standard TCP/IP Port" then click the "Next >" button.

Click the "Next >" button.

In the "Printer Name or IP &Address:" text box type the IP Address of the Printer and the "Port Name:" text box will populate automatically then click the "Next >" button.

Click the "Finish" button.

You should now be at the Install Printer Software segment of the Add Printer Wizard so select the Manufacture and Printer or use the "Have Disk..." button and follow through with the ensuing dialog boxes.

Your Printer should now be setup.
