Can't ping virtual machine

I can't ping my Kubuntu 7.04 virtual machine or my WinXP Pro virtual machine. I've identified their IP addresses. Also nmap doesn't show them. What do I need to do?

Are you using NAT or Bridged networking?

NAT.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I apologize for the terseness of my original post. To clarify, I cannot ping the Kubuntu virtual machine from my laptop, which is on the same network, and the VM can't ping the laptop. I can ping Kubuntu from the iMac on which it's running, and the iMac can ping Kubuntu. Also Kubuntu can ping my Airport.

Ultimately I am trying to use CVS on Kubuntu but the server is not responding. I suspect it can't reach me.

Kubuntu 7.04 says its IP address is 192.168.151.129.

Windows XP says its IP address is 192.168.151.128.

NAT just uses the network of the host to send/get information. The IP addresses you are seeing are not accessible by anything other than the host itself.

If you set your networking to Bridged, it will give your VM's their own IP addresses which will be pingable by other systems on the network.

This answered my question. I can now ping the VM. Thanks!
