Topic Name : Creating a Linux Virtual Machine in Fusion

Publication Name : Using VMware Fusion

Product/Version : VMware Fusion/11

Question :

I need to create a VM that is configured the same way as our company standard Linux Workstation.  To create a standard workstation we use a PXE boot server to automate the setup.  Is there a way I can create a VM in Fusion Pro using our PXE boot server?

Hi,

Yes, PXE boot is available.

When you create a Linux VM, try using a intel e1000e when test the PXE install.

IOW check the .vmx file if it has a line similar to this:

ethernet1.virtualDev = “e1000e”

If not, then change the ethernet1.virtualDev line.

The other virtual network cards such as vmxnet3 also have pxe boot capabilities, but I don't think the driver is part of all Linux distributions at this time? (I might be wrong)
