Boot from USB Device

I know historically you cannot boot from a mapped USB device in VMware Fusion, and you cannot make virtual thumb drives, either, that you could boot from. Is there any specific reason for this? I know I have seen plenty of use-case why one would want to boot from USB while trying to find out how to do this in VMware. And yes, I am aware of programs like Plop, but it seems like I should be able to do this natively.

Thanks in advance

Yes, that would be convenient.

But, the USB drive contains a disk image and a virtual hard drive is bootable in a virtual machine.

So, as a work-around,

  • Create a virtual hard drive large enough to hold the USB image
  • Mount that virtual hd on OS X
  • Use Disk Utility to restore the USB image onto that virtual hd
  • Boot the virtual machine from that virtual hd

Smooth Sailing!
