Automatic snapshots resulting file greater then total space on SSD

Bit surprised I haven't seen anything on this so figure I'll post here as I've now seen this happen a few times.

Got a VM with latest Fusion on my local SSD. VM has automatic snapshots enabled.

Sometimes I suddenly see that all available disk space is starting to get used on my Mac. When I then look I notice that it is the VM Fusion snapshot files with a size set to like 500GB or more (note this is a 250GB HD). I then just see my available space on my HD go down and start getting the warning I'm running low on space.

Killing Fusion then frees it up immediately, if I do not then I pretty much end up with all space used.

I've only seen this with snapshots from Fusion. Got a feeling it might be some kind of bug in APFS itself but just wondering if anyone else has seen this problem. Note it does not happen all the time, maybe like 5% of the times or possible even less.

Thx.

VM has automatic snapshots enabled.

What did you expect?

Each snapshot takes disk space, real space, not virtual.

And, remember, a snapshot is not a back-up.
