  • 1.  Adding a new network adapter to Fusion

    Hello everybody,

I'm using now for a while Fusion (1.1 RC) on a MacMini.

Would like a add a second network adapter to the Mini, so I have three network devices.

Should be a USB2Ethernet adapter, found one (Linksys) and the corresponding drivers for OSX.

My question is how to make this known to Fusion, how to add it or select it?

If I try to add one in Fusion (+ sign in the Settings), I can't select which one.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Yasmin

When you go to add a Network Adapter in the VM you will not have a choice as you have to use the one built into Fusion.

To learn a little bit more about Network Settings in Fusion have a look at the following.

The only way to use non-Ethernet (en0) or Wifi (en1) Internet connections in a VM is to switch your VM to NAT networking (Virtual Machine > Networking NAT). If you must also have your machine bridged to Ethernet or Wifi, you can add a second virtual adapter by shutting down your VM completely (not suspend), and in Virtual Machine > Settings, click on + and Add Network... that interface can be set to NAT to access USB, Expresscard, 3G phone internet connections just fine. Ideally set Network 1 to NAT, and Network 2 to Bridged if you need this kind of arrangement.

In the simplest case, if you want to access an USB internet connection in a Fusion VM, just switch your networking to NAT.

    Thx for the replies.

Well, that machine (mailserver) is using now NAT.

The reason why I'm asking is, that I have problems with the router (where the Mini and on it the VM with the mailserver) - in the DMZ, has problems with the routing.

I don't want to explain it here, it's too complicated.

So, I wanted to add a USB network adapter, so I can have a DMZ, LAN and Wlan connection on that Mini and run it directly.

Thanks for explaining. WIth a USB device your choices are to enable its network capabilities through OS X and share them to the VM using NAT (nothing special needed inside the VM), it will see your new OS connection.

Second choice is to bypass using the device in OS X and try to connect it virtually to the guest VM. You will need the USB device drivers installed in Windows. Not all USB connection devices will work but some of them do. In this mode, your VM has exclusive access to the USB connection and it will not share automatically (or nicely) with OS X, unlike NAT above. I don't think this is what you are looking for but I'm describing it so you know the option is there.

Well, I think I have to make the adapter known to OSX, I don't think my mailserver (runs under CentOS 4.5) will recognize the USB adapter.

On the other hand, I have to check all that security stuff, so it makes sense this solution.

    Thx,
