I've downloaded several VMTN appliances and they're awesome to run out-of-the-box on OS X. But without opening the VMX file I have no idea how 'big' they are, ram-wise. I have a modest 1 GB machine and with the Release Note about opening a machine 'too large' for the system can bring it down; I would like to see a summary or presentation of RAM size and be allowed to adjust it.
Thanks!
Hi rcardona,
I hate to give a canned response, but we can't really comment on future functionality. That being said, we'll definitely take all your suggestions seriously and make sure we give you folks a great product!
also for those who may not be as familure with our products if you would like to see how much ram a VM has allocated to it you can open the .vmx file with Textedit
the following line represents the amount of ram allocated to the VM
memsize = "512"
you can safely change the memory value as long as it is divisable by 4
I'm in favor of a simplified Mac-friendly interface but the all-or-nothing approach is a bit worrisome.
Once you expose lay users to the proverbial 'can of worms' of the VMX config file and expect them to keep numeric values in quotes, know the units (RAM is MB not bytes or KB) and perform, albeit, grade school arithmetic things are looking downhill. Not to mention they'll want to experiment with everything else like changing device types and then OS's they're not likely familiar with won't boot because of the underlying virtual hardware driver mismatches.
Search the forums for misconfigured config file stories with duplicate entries, bad formatting (missing quotes), invalid values, etc. then consider offering some configurability of Fusion VMs.
Thanks for listening
