vCenter Opearation Manager Information

Hi,

We have purchased the license of VMware vCenter Operations Manager Enterprise edition. I am in confusion how to proceed for installation.

1) Can we install Operation manager on any windows server and if yes then how to. OR vcenter operation manager is only available as virtual appliances?

2) I refereed the site "

http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vcenter-operations-manager/buy.html" and as per this link Enterprise edition contain vCenter configuration manager, vFabric Hyperic, vCenter Infrastructure Navigator, vCenter charge back manager so how to install it with vCenter operation manager?

Let me know if any useful document is available for this.

Thanks

Hi,

Hardware and software requirements can be found in the vC Ops Standalone 5.6 Install Guide, which includes sizing recommendations.

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vcops-standalone-56-install-guide.pdf

=> Now my client has purchased two licenses for VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite Enterprise 5.0 (25 VM Pack). Now if I will go with vApps installation then will I get all the features of enterprise edition by default or I need to install the features like charge back manager, configuration manager etc. seprately on vApps VM.

The other products in the vCenter Operations Management Suite are installed seperately.  Some come in vApp form, like Hyperic, Virtual Infrastructure Navigator (VIN) and vCenter Operations Manager, while Chargeback Manager and vCenter Configuration Manager are strictly Windows based installs.

It is very important to note that if you go with the vCenter Operations Manager standalone install instead of the vApp, your customer will not get the benefit of the vSphere UI, capacity planning, analysis and reporting features they have paid for with the Enterprise Suite. I highly recommend you use the vApp if at all possible.

vCenter Operations Manager Enterprise (vCOPs Ent) can be part of vCenter Operations Manager Enterprise Suite, which includes vCOPs Ent, Infrastructure Navigator, Chargeback and Config Manager or is sold separately.

There are two versions of vCOPs Enterprise - vApp and Standalone.

Standalone version is intended to monitor not only virtual infrastructure, but physical environment as well and it is always part of Suite. If you have license keys with Servers or Workstation or Terabyte or Network Device description, you have purchased Standalone. vApp version can be part of Suite and is dedicated to monitor virtual infrastructure only. It is licensed per VM, no matter if they are workstations or servers.

Standalone version is installed on Windows or Linux machine. It requires commercial database such as MS SQL or Oracle - please, have a look into VMware Product Interoperability Matrix.vApp version uses Postgres SQL bundled within the vApp which makes installation process quite easy.

And last but not least, if you don't plan to monitor physical infrastructure and want to use Suite products (ie. Chargeback, etc), you can use vApp, too.

All documentation is published on VMware's website - go to http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/ and find the docs for particular product. In case of Standalone version, I strictly advise to RTFM because whole suite requires apropriate planning and sizing.

I hope it helps.

As mentioned there are two installs available for vCenter Operations.  The vApp is actually preferred/recommended for most customers and includes all capabilities of the installable version.  The installable or standalone version does not include capacity management features nor does it include the ever popular vSphere UI you may have seen during demonstrations of the product.

You will be able to monitor physical infrastructure with the vApp, provided you have also purchased additional third-party adapters (which are required regardless of which install you go with).

Highly recommend that you go with the vApp.

Hi,

Thanks to both of you.

Now if I will go with vApps installation then will I get all the features of enterprise edition by default or I need to install the features like charge back manager, configuration manager etc. seprately on vApps VM.

=> Also I have checked the Hardware requirement if I will install vcops on windws server. Its as below.

OS:  Windows Server 2008

CPU: 4

Memory:  14 GB

Disk Storage: 1.5 TB (FSDB = 1.5 TB, Database= 100GB)

Is this enough requirement for all the features of vCenter Operation Manager Enterprise Edition.

Only want to know that in any VMware document it is mentioned like we will not get benefit of the vSphere UI, capacity planning, analysis and reporting features if go with Vmware standalone installation.

I'm not aware that this is specifically stated in any documentation.  However, if you look through the vApp documentation you will notice that the capabilities are different than the Standalone version documentation.
