vCOps Documentation and Training

After going through this documentation:

vCenter Operations Manager Getting Started Guide (vSphere UI)

vCenter Operations Manager Getting Started Guide (Custom UI)

vCenter Operations Manager Administration Guide (Custom UI)

Using vCenter Operations Manager in vSphere

I have to say that I find them extremely lacking, particularly on the Custom UI.  They are great for getting things installed and configured initially but leave a lot of unanswered questions. Vmware offers a 3-day class called:

VMware vCenter Operations Manager: Advanced Usage and Dashboard Design [V5.x]

Which appears to go to a lot more detail on things like the Custom UI.  Does anyone have recommendations for training and resouces to learn more on the Custom UI beside the $2700 VMware class?
Trainsignal has a vCOps series that touches on the Custom UI but doesn't really go into depth on it.

Does anyone have any other recommendations on either documentation, books, or training resources that go into Custom UI?

You always have your trusty vCOps community. Smiley Happy

I've heard good things about the class for adv usage and dashboard design, and that it's the highest-level public training we have out there to-date for vCOps.

I do hear you, though. A vendor can offer a truly magnificent product, but without the community and public support and training options it can easily go unappreciated and undervalued. The more advanced content is hard to come by on the public stage - this is partially why I've been spending more time in this community getting some answers out in the wild for public consumption and thus Google'able. Will there be any significant public release of official advanced content for the product - yes I believe it is coming as users are maturing past the Advanced UI capabilities in to the Custom UI capabilities.

However, if you're mostly curious about the 3rd party-released material, I think it has to do with the market's demand for the content. The vCOps product is starting to get out there is a larger quantity due to packaging changes/customer adoption, so I think demand is building towards a point where you might start seeing those 3rd party publishers.

In the meantime, maybe we could start a poll to see which of us wants to contribute to writing a book. :smileymischief:

Count me in

We are an extensive user of the custom UI, having integrated business process data from a variety of sources using the GenSQL and POST adapters. Created some very interesting and useful dashboards which are used on a daily basis by business and application teams. I agree with your assessment about the custom UI. Most vcops customers I know make extensive use of the vSphere UI, but haven’t yet leveraged the true power of the custom UI.

I can't tell i'm qualified enough to write a book about vCOPS but i totally agree on the fact that its a great product and people have explored only a small part of it. I have evaluated almost all the adapters possible for vCOPS and have seen the capability of the tool. And Hyperic with vCOPS is enough for any monitoring. These two put together, there is no other tool that can/will beat them in the monitoring software field Smiley Happy
