Hi Guys, can I first say I'm really excited about Log Insight - I'm sure a lot of people will have tried to do what you're doing now with the likes of Splunk; attempting to fully understand what various parts of the vSphere infrastructure are doing and providing some history and context to what one sees when one has to go log diving is hugely useful.
Regarding my issue - I attempted the initial configuration from an older infrastructure server that only had IE9 on it. The wizard allowed me to progress, however once I got the "Select NTP source" page, clicking the "test connectivity" knocked me back to the start of the wizard. When I then attempted to navigate to just "https://[ip address of log insight host]/", it then presented me with the "Sorry, this browser is not supported".
I'd suggest that to ensure the initial configuration completes properly that this browser test should occur before the wizard, opposed to just at first login - as I know a lot of people will be running slightly dated versions of Internet Explorer on their infrastructure/terminal servers that will be accessing this initially before they realise that a more modern browser is required.
I hope this sort of feedback is useful.
Cheers,
Sam
Hi Sam,
Thanks for the feedback, it's useful. The browser compatibility check is supposed to happen before the wizard occurs but it didn't seem to happen in your case. Also, IE 9 should be supported unless you're in compatibility view or quirks mode. Can you let us know the following info?
- Exact IE version
- OS version
- Whether or not you had 'compatibility view' on
- Whether or not you had 'quirks mode' on
Thanks,
Erik
Hi Erik,
Just as an FYI - this is in a lab environment so it's not exactly the most patched environment... but to answer your questions:
IE Version:
OS: Server 2008 R2 Standard (Service Pack 1)
Compatibility Mode: Looks like this was actually enabled thanks to the "Display intranet sites in Compatibility View" setting in IE9 - my bad, presumed it wasn't by default.
Quirks mode: Even before (when accidentally in Compatibility Mode), it looks like it wasn't in Quirks mode (based on the results of the script that's documented here: html - How to tell if a browser is in "quirks" mode? - Stack Overflow)
Cheers,
Sam
When you disable compatibility mode does the UI work properly?
Erik
Hi, yep, IE9 seems to function and load just fine when the "Display intranet sites in Compatibility View" option is disabled. I did just now try to re-enable the function and also didn't see the "Your browser is unsupported" warning however I'm not sure how consistently this setting is applied (or if it requires a restart of the browser or similar).
Cheers,
Sam
I notice a similar kind of problem. I'm able to login and do things properly using IE without any problems pointing to the IP address, however when I point to the "Host Name" of it, it gives me the incompatible browser message/error.
I only noticed this when presenting Log Insight to vCOPS and it decided to point me to the hostname.
Thanks for reporting this and all the information everyone! In terms of IE both 9 and 10 are supported, however compatibility mode and quirks mode must be turned off (we will ensure the documentation gets updated). We have confirmed that certain configurations do not display the unsupported browser banner as expected and we are working to address this.
Sam - has your question been answered? If so can you please mark this discussion as answered?
