I am trying to deploy a VM from a template according to this post
I gather the machine needs to be assigned to a resource pool but I have no resource pools defined.
And therefore get the error
Clone virtual machine T_WIN2K3_32b
A specified parameter was not correct.
spec.location.pool
Is it not possible to allocate a vm to another entity in the tree?

If you are not using Resource Pools, then you simply map that "pool" attribute to the "Resources" root resource pool. This Resource Pool is hidden in your vCenter Client, but vCO will allow you to map to it

Thanks Burke, it was well hidden.
Now next question but I will open a new thread for that.
