Shrink a disk VMware ESXi 5.1

Is there any easy way to shrink a disk on ESXi 5.1 on a guest running Windows 2008 R2? From what I read, it's kind of difficult because Windows will place files all over the file system, many times at the very end thus preventing a disk shrink from happening.

For better visibility please post questions in the Discussion forums rather than as a document.

Anyway, a supported way to shring a virtual disk is using e.g. VMware Converter.

With thin provisioned virtual disks you could also shrink the partition from within the guest OS itself (using Disk Management), then create a new, temporary partition on the free disk space, zero it out using sdelete, delete the partition and then reclaim the zeroed blocks using vmkfstools with the punchzero option.
