Running Workstation 7.1.2 on Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit laptop. Any command from vmrun in either the Workstation directory or VIX 10.0.1 directory gives an error message.
For example:
vmrun.exe -T ws list
returns 2 error messages;
unable to connect to host.
Error: The specified version was not found
I know that the VIX libraries can sometimes lag behind the release but can usually be fixed by editing the vixwrapper-config.txt, but makes no difference to vmrun program. Is this a known issue, and is there a fix for this as it is disrupting our testing processes which make extensive use of vmrun.
Thanks
First of all, VMware Workstation 7.1.2 ships with a version of VIX that is compatible with itself, you shouldn't need to install an additional version of VIX if you are just using VIX with Workstation. In fact, this will be true will all Workstation releases. If this is the case for you, you can just uninstall VIX 1.10 before installing Workstation, and you should have the correct version of VIX installed.
Second, I am very surprised that editing the config does not work in this case. Could you please post both your edited file as well as the vixWrapper log files from the vmware-%USERNAME% directory in your user's temp directory?
Lastly, we will be releasing shortly an updated version of the stand alone VIX SDK with support for Workstation 7.1.2 and Player 3.1.2.
Sorry for the trouble.
OK resolved as it was an installation order issue. I need VIX installing as writing code for ESX and vSphere as well. I made the mistake of installing VIX 1.10.1 after Workstation 7.1.2. This replaces a working vixwrapper-config.txt from Workstation with one from VIX installer which does not have the entries for the newer versions of Workstation and Player.
Couple of suggestions:
1. KB article on installation order
2. Possible to release new VIX at same time as a product that is affected with it. As Workstation ships with the relevant components it must have been tested.
Thanks
