weak scsi throughtput to tape from guest (SCSI passtrough)

Dear newsgroup,

I have resetly updated a customer from VMware Server 1.07 to ESXi 3.5. In the past the host was running on 64Bit Windows. The guest (Windows 2003 SBS R2) is connected over the Adaptec 2940UW to a Quantum/Tandberg DLT-V4. In the VMware Server environmet we were able to reach a thoughput of 600MByte/minute (writing) and 1800MByte/minute (reading). Now with ESXi 3.5 (latest build 17..) we get only 130 MByte/minute (R+W). The VMtools are updated to the latest build.

I have tried different things but with no effect:

  • 2 SCSI Controllers in the guest (0: HD, 1:Tape) vs. 1 SCSi controller

  • Second Controller Buslogic vs. LSI

  • Same SCSI ID in guest as in host vs. different SCSI ID

  • Adaptec 2940U vs. 2940U2W

  • Update/Downgrade Tape firmware and driver

Does anyone knows more about this? Things to be tested or modified?

Kind regards Daniel
