I have Virtual Switch: vSwitch1 which has a Virtual Machine Port Group called "Virtual Machine Network Test" that is connected to a Physical NIC. The physical NIC isnt connected.
Attached to this vSwitch are 2 virtual machines. The properties of each virtual machine point the network to that vSwitch1.
Is it possible for the machines to communicate with each other without having to attach the Physical Adapter to a "proper hub or switch".
Yes absolutely. In fact if the NIC is not even connected jsut remove it from the vSwitch - this will work as a host-based software switch for comms between any vms that are connected to it

Yes your VM can communicate through the vSwitch. You dont need to bind a NIC to the vSwitch.
Yes it is, if you remove the physical nic from that vSwitch, your vSwitch becomes an "internal" vswitch and any VM's in that port group can talk to each other, however none will be able to access anything externally until you reconnect a physical nic.
